Fire & Emergency Response

Wildfires, floods and hazardous material spill disasters can strike at any time. If you think that you will never have to be evacuated you may be sadly mistaken. It is important that you make preparations to evacuate your family and your pets in any situation.

There are some steps you can take to be better prepared to care for your pets in a disaster situation.

Never leave an animal chained.. it is a certain death sentence.

  • Ensure your pets are wearing up to date identification at all times. Consider microchipping your pets.
  • Take them with you. If it is not safe for you it is not safe for your pets.
  • In case you are not home, make arrangements in advance with a trusted friend or neighbor to take your pets and meet with you at a designated location.
The Disaster Animal Response Team of Nova Scotia (DARTNS) is a volunteer, not for profit society, working under the direction of the Canadian Red Cross, to set up and run emergency shelters and reception centres for animals affected by man made and natural disasters.

They partner and work with other like minded organizations to insure animal needs are met during emergencies. They also have the ability to work in animal seizure shelters under the direction of the local responding animal shelter's Incident Commander .
